    A day labourer with no trade or business, no money at interest, no property save a few household goods, that are barely sufficient, and a wife and family to support. Her name was Sarah Pepper, widow of Thomas Pepper, labr., who belonged to Southill, but at time of his death lived at Maulden with a cert. from Southill. At Pepper's depth his widow received 1s. relief from Southill to bring up her infant dau. aged about a month. The parish continued this payment as weekly relief for perhaps 6 mths, but then stopped it. With her friend's help she kept child though parish wished to put it in the workhouse. Wm. Brasier married her c. Aug. 1789. At Easter last Southill agreed that he should have 1s. per week for the child, and he was paid it until a month ago. The parish were still willing, but had contracted for the upkeep of the poor both in and out of the workhouse, and the contractor wants child taken in. Endorsed order to Mr. Wells, the Overseer, to appear the following day at 10 a.m. at the Justices' meeting at Sandy to explain
