Roote Gardens Jas Forbes Crocker's duties:- To keep accounts & receive & pay all monies; To have general superintendence of repairs of abbey bldgs. & of storeyard & mechanics; To pay rates & taxes & tradesmen's bills for repairs at abbey; To have general superintence of woods, receive money for woods sold, & superintend Ireland's sales of underwood (details of process); (woods in N. Beds. district under Kent); who lives at Bedford & reports ftntly.; Crocker attends audit; To keep account of monies from farms brought ftntly by Todd; & give him money for repair; To furnish gardener with money; To superintend Boughton at the brick kiln; To pay Whitbread's men who do fencing; To have general superintendence of abbey repairs & storeyard; (ordered by Duke, sometimes through Roote); To supervise storeyard; (farm repairs are done by Roote under Tween); To pay mechanics & labourers ftntly at his office (bankers will remit £500 for this); To keep account with Barnard; To make up general account half yearly To estimate for extraordinary works. Crocker's comments are written at the side. His main difficulty seems to be that the demarcation of responsibility is not always clear.
