  • Title
CHURCHWARDENS - Miscellaneous, including brief books & sequestrations
  • Scope and Content
Note: following a fire at Pavenham on 4 May 1709 a brief was issued to raise money to compensate for the loss, computed to amount to over £700. Collections were apparently made in 1710 and 1711. No information on the brief appears in the Pavenham parish records and even the Overseers’ accounts for 1709-1711 make no mention of the fire or of maintenance of the sufferers. there are no burials recorded in the register for May 1709 which might indicate that no one died in the fire. the original petition for a brief would have been approved by the Justices in Quarter Sessions before being submitted to the Lord Chancellor, but unfortunately the Quarter Sessions Minutes for 1709-1710 are not extant. See P 68/1/2 for collections at Pavenham on briefs, 1676-1678
