  • Scope and Content
Did not know if you would be at Guernsey or Brampton. We have been wanderers on account of Samuel's health. We took him to the sea by the help of the rail road from Birmingham to Chester, thence to Bangor and Carnarvon and 20 miles beyond to Pwllheli where we lodged for a fortnight - view - Welch Alps. Pwllheli a quiet town, only one bathing machine. No company. People undress on the beach and walk into the sea, women as well as men, without any ceremony. Return journey. Sorry about your reception at Brampton. Do not like the idea of Guernsea because of the catalogue of services, together with a Board of Elders. There was no compact between me and the Rector of Pertenhall. I promised him what maintenance I thought would place him above the fear of want. That he is deranged on some points is clear to me, on others not. I should not wonder at this returning and probably he will. I do not want to sell the living and with his life in it it would be of little value. Endorsed "the date of this letter is July 26th 1838. The next in the series is dated April 9th 1842. The interval embraces our residence at Ockbrook, Derbyshire, where Mr Martyn also resided, during which time little or no correspondence passed between us. In March 1842 I was inducted to the living of Pertenhall and our correspondence recommenced and was continued to September 7th 1848. W. Mudge January 11 1849. ... Mr. M's last 2 or 3 notes to me relating to the sale of the advowson are destroyed."
