  • Scope and Content
Reads- Have talked with Vincent Millard. It seems his reverend landlord has acted with duplicity; last Feb., reverend T. Barnaby proposed to Millard to repair his farm & advance his rent £140-£160. Shaw of Woburn estimated repairs at £70. They asked for timber, but I had none to sell. Millard knew of no intention to sell estate. Millard has received demand for ½ year's advanced rent. Advowson may be worth £30 (£4 paid by Duke out of tithes; 3 guineas for herbage of churchyard; something from Ratcliff; & there is an estate of 40 guineas per annum purchased with Queen Anne's Bounty, rent of which is divided between Crawley & Ridgmont. Repair at Thurleigh were put by Jones under management of James Millard, our carpenter at Woburn, & William Briggs, principal tenant at Thurleigh, who paid labourers weekly & sent account to Millard. I have always been displeased with the train this business was in, but from its great distance was unable to alter it. It seems Briggs has overdrawn £130. Duke says write for immediate repayment.
