- TitlePetition to The Archbishop of Canterbury from a number of churchmen, parishioners and worshippers of St. Mary's, Luton asking him to refuse the Rev. E.R. Mason's request to sell the Vicarage House and grounds
- Date free textn.d. [c.1897]
- Production dateFrom: 1897 To: 1897
- Scope and Contentfor the following reasons: (1) the historic value of the site, it has been used by vicars since 1219, and the building is of very considerable age - a very sufficient reason "in a distinctly modern town such as this" (2)the practical importance of the Vicarage being next to the church, and the fact that the nearest alternative site was over a quarter of a mile away (3)that the development of the site by the Corporation as a stone-yard and stabling and for an Electric Light Works would not be conducive to the worshippers at the church (4)that the reasons to sell,( that it is unhealthy due to being at a low level the riverside and that it is insanitary), can be met by (a) present day scientific skills to rectify the defects (b) town drainage and storm water disposal schemes (costing _40,000) which are already commenced (c) the estate of the late Vicar could go a long way to meeting the cost of making the conditions sanitary. Signed by 21 members and a further 6 nonconformists.
