Scope and Content
"Born at Dover, Kent, the place of his father's legal settlement. Apprenticed to Mr. Pope of Woburn. Boarded former part of his time with Mr. Pope, and afterwards lodged at Mr. Rutley's at Husborne Crawley. He slept at both places above forty days. He slept the last night of his time at Mr. Rutley's. He boarded and lodged there with the knowledge and consent of Mr. Pope." With additional facts on the case, namely: About 15 years ago, John Manning was bound with the consent of his uncle William Rutley as an apprentice to Mr. Pope who is a carpenter and joiner at Woburn.. Manning lodged there for the first 3 years of his apprenticeship. Pope then went to live with his family at Husborne Crawley where he remained the following two years during which time the pauper [Manning] boarded and lodged with the family of Mr. Pope. After about five years from the beginning of the apprenticeship Pope returned to Woburn, and the pauper returned to Woburn and continued to reside with his master "under his roof" there for nearly twelve months. The pauper and his master "not perfectly agreeing", Manning often absented himself from home at night sleeping with his uncle at Husborne Crawley without his master's leave. Pope considered it would be better to come to an agreement with the uncle, William Rutley, and agreed to allow him a certain sum of money for the pauper's board and lodging during the last few months of the apprenticeship. Manning actually lodged with his uncle, but continued to serve his master as an apprentice until the expiration of the term. "Your opinion is therefore requested whether the place of settlement of the said John Manning is in the parish of Husborne Crawley or in the parish of Woburn" - with Nolan's reply "I am of the opinion that the Pauper is settled in Husborne Crawley" 5 Kings Bench Walk, Temple
