- Scope and ContentFrom: Robert How, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford Late Crown now Borough Arms Dunstable “I have this day been over to Dunstable and find the roof of one of the stables is fallen in. I should think will cost fifty pounds to put to right I perceive by the convenants of the lease Mr Simpson was bound to put and keep the property in repair. Mr H Simpson is dead and Ms Simpson is the sole executor. She would be glad to see you if you would grant her an interview stating any time when she could see you. She thinks the stable might be dispenced with and the yard enlarged as there is plenty of stable room for the house without it. If you would consent to this she would clear away the old materials and put the other premises into good repair and take it on for another seven years at the same rent. Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience.” Note written by Thomas Sworder, Hertford “State of Stable Cost to repair. Is it really wanted for the house? What business does it do? What is the rent she now pays? Could she pay more for another lease for 7 years? q. advisability of letting it away from Luton Brewery for 7 years or only 2 yrs. Ask Mr B Bennett of Dunstable, call on him. Give no decided ans. to Ms S.”
