  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I have received your letter enclosing Mr.Trethewey’s I will show it to Messrs Anstee & Co. today, if they come and let you know what they say. I don’t think they will take less than £300 as that is the same they fixed upon before Mr.Holyoaks valued their interest. The Board of Health do not seem inclined to act fairly with the tenant of the King’s Arms, he is willing to go out at once if they will pay him a fair sum, so that he will not be a loser. If Mr.Bailey on behalf of the Board writes to you, to give notice to Messrs Anstee & Co., you had better write back to say the understanding on your selling was that Messrs Anstee & Co. would give up their interest on the tenant in possession being compensated. You will find a letter from me to this effect. The plait market is to be in Cheapside, at the back of Sharples’ Bank. The Board have entered into an agreement for purchase of the land required for it. Mr.Bennett has just left and he is not and is certain Messrs Anstee & Co. will not argue to take less than £300. He thinks this is reasonable considering £200 has been laid out on the property in order to get a license. I would think Mr.Trethewey will spring another £50 to save the expense of arbitration.”
