From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I enclose you cheque for rent to Michas and on other side send you account of deductions for the ½ year. From what I hear I fear there is a strong opposition getting up against purchasing the King’s Arms and Gaitskells property and that you will not now have the chance of selling it. I am sorry for it as it is of no good to the Brewery, no tenant being able to live there. The removal of these houses moreover would have enhanced the value of the Crown considerably. Nothing more has been done respecting the Rising Sun that I can hear. The tenant is afraid it will fall down as the earth has been removed just in front of the house. Please send receipt for the rent.” April 6 Sargood taxes 16.8 May 11 Lawrence 5 May 16 Rudling 5.10 June 30 Rumbles 5.10 Puddephatt 2.14.0 July 16 Cash 378.16.0 Sep 29 Sargood 4 Rumbles 11.11 Surnell 7.4 Howard 11.11 Cadwell 19.8 Reddall 8 Pratt 6.8 Low 13 Haydon 1.4.10 Cooper 1.3.8 Prune 3 Brewer 17 Oct 15 cash 375.11.6 ½ years rent £766.5
