  • Scope and Content
Reads- Hay: at one time very little, as land in bad condition, not sufficiently manured; but from 1761 approx. much better; consumption entirely by hunters - His Grace & Lord Tavistock; except when the Duke of Richmond & Marquess of Blandford was once here; and at the time of the camp at Winchester, Lord Ossory & the officers of the Bedfordshire Militia came on a party of shooting, whom I ordered to furnish with everything; now 2 cobs, if hay holds price will be worth £40; but uncertain. Wood: "the gentlement of the Dunstable hunt, for the time that subsisted, used what there was occasion for in the house, which I understood they was to do, but had none at the kennel of His Grace's; since which from the year 1760, the Duke of Richmond, who has been here spring & autumn, he had the same use of it in the house, which I understood to be my Lord Duke's orders, & therefore if wrong it is without any advtg. to me, & being at that time according to orders, for His Grace to have the use of the house & linen & furniture, but he's never used any at the kennell." Repairs: (much detail). Expense of drifts: (possible economies) Concludes with impassioned defence of financial service for 20 years "never got or saved a shilling in his service in my life" etc.
