From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I enclose your cheque for rent less deductions as on other side. Mr.How called on me yesterday about the Rising Sun, the house the Midland Company wish to purchase. I see it is put down in the valuation at £400 and I think you may very well ask £600. It will increase the value of some other of your houses in the neighbourhood if the Midland carry their line through the house (about 40) they propose to pull down, instead of the line for which they have the sanction of Parliament. The House at Leagrave I suppose you will sell, it is ½ a mile from the Railway and I don’t suppose there will be a station much nearer than Luton. Sir Edward Filmer however is offering his land at a lower price to enduce the company to have a station on his property at Leegrave. P.S I had an increase in my family last Friday, another girl – all going on well.” £ s d ¼ year rent 383.2.6 Lowe pd Tax 16.6 Charlton “ “ 4.7 Hyde “ “ 5.6 Lawrence “ “ 3.9 Puddephatt “ “ 3.11.8 Puddephatt Land tax 1.8 White pd tax 4.9 6.7.5 £376.15.1
