  • Scope and Content
From: Robert How, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Old Brewery I have some thoughts of getting up a Company to supply the Town with Water and think these premises will be the place for the works and perhaps the well may do for supply. Will you have the Kindness to let me know the lowest price for the whole of the premises and if I can, will do my best to get them purchased for this purpose. Congreve at the "Cock" makes use of the Yard for setting waggons Carts &c and he informs me that you gave him leave to do so. If you are willing that he should occupy a considerable portion of the yard without paying please let me know, as I have told him he will have to pay rent unless you write me to this effect. An answer will oblige" From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; 8 Oct 1864 To: Robert How "I am not prepared to give quite a definitive answer to your question at a moment's notice but I think that £6,000 would purchase the old Brewery at Luton including Malting & Houses within the Walls" Note presumably by Thomas Sworder: "It is a pity the old Brewery could not be made into a new market for Luton there wd be plenty of room for a water company and a market"
