- Scope and ContentFrom: R.Shafto Hawks, Rotherhithe [Surrey]; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am glad to hear the result of the Meeting of yesterday, which seems to me to be a turn in the right direction. Also that you saw Mr.Vyse, as it may be the means of affecting a little more time to see how you really stand. I tried to get the London & County Bank to come in & support an Inspectorship & thought I had succeeded but yesterday received a confidential note stating "that the Bank would not take the lead in any way because they don't want to publish the amount of their debt altho' they consider it secured". What the last part means I cannot say. Do you think they seek to make you a Partner? If you see your way clear I think it very desirable for you to get rid of Mr.Vyse. As long as that hangs over you will not be comfortable. I have from £1,200 to £1,500 which I can lay my hands upon within a fortnight or so & if you require more, I can obtain another £1,000 for you & if necessary you can have £500 at a couple of days notice. I shall not trouble Mr.Mason today but as no doubt I shall hear again from you I may then have occasion to call & see him".
