  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, 2 Serene Place, Broadstairs; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am surprised you have so soon returned from the Black Mountain Country. I should much have liked to have been down there with you. Had I not received four letter today I intended writing to return you John's letter. I see no objection to his purchasing, but I quite agree with you that he would be as well without it, as until Page's Lease is up, he must be an annual loser without he has money lying idle at his bankers & does not know what to do with it. The sum Mr.Moon's friend has is small, but if arrangements can be made about the freeholds that sum would be a great relief to me in carrying on the business. I shall be glad to hear from you what arrangements you think could be made with a Partner with that sum as with my liabilities I don't see my way clear. If you are of opinion that it can be managed satisfactorily I would at once make an appointment with Mr.Moon. I think of giving this place a little longer trial. I am much stronger than I was still my throat doesn't get well. I went to Canterbury last Saturday & it rained the whole day & unfortunately got another cold which has thrown me back a little. The sea bathing I fancy does me much good. I jump into the open sea from a boat which is a great improvement on the bathing machines. If fine I am going to Ramsgate Regatta this afternoon. Tomorrow we have one here. Yesterday there was one at Margate so we are quite in the Regatta line. Ellen & Children are quite well & join in love to all hoping you have derived benefit from the Welch air". From Thomas Sworder, Hertford; 28 Aug 1858; To: Thomas Sworder, Broadstairs "I have recd your lt of 27 inst. I do not quite understand what you mean abt your liability. You frighten me, but as the sum of £10,000 offered in Partnership is small I think you had better suggest to Mr.Moon that for so small a sum it wd not be worth while to incur the expense of a Valuation of the whole property but that if he liked to join you, he shd have so much pmt on the £10,000 as the accts made up annually wd after payment of all Chqs on the Business shew to be a fair proportion of the net profits on the £10,000".
