  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; To: Thomas Sworder, Ramsgate "Mr.Benning came here last Tuesday abt the unsatisfactory manner in which things stood betwn you & Mr.Burr's Trustees & parlarly reging that an addl Sum of £5,000 shd be pd in part of the pche money of Burr's Brewery. I told Mr.Benning I could not pay down £5,000 but I wd give Security for it & Mr.Benning has been here again today & I have delivered over the Title Deeds to my Berden etc to secure £5,000 which Mr.Crabb will lend to them. I have also signed an agreement to complete the pche on 29th Sept next. You cannot think how this depresses me. You have led me into it & I suppose I must I must [sic] get myself out of it. Directly you return you must set to work to offer by Sale by Auction those parts of the Property not required for the Brewery or which can well be spared & Mr.Benning agrees then may as well be sold before the completion of the Pche as owner we shall pay ad val Duty on Pche & ad v Duty on Mtge. I will meet you therefore at Luton as soon as possible to settle with you the property to be sold. I question if Cumberland & Medcalf had not better be jointly employed in the Sale. I insist upon this being done forthwith. I have written to Mr.Moss requesting him to get some Settlemt with H.Vyse but it appears H.Vyse has left England for a Month. I wish to shew you Moss' answer. I have also written to John at Dowlais abt selling the Brewery & I hope Rawes & himself will reopen negociations. You must stir yourself & save every Penny & get rid of your outlying Property or you will ruin me as well as yourself. My kind regards to all at Ramsgate. I expected to have heard from you about Burr. I send this therefore at a Venture".
