  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I regret much I did not mention to you except in general terms what I was going to do to satisfy the Bank. The fact is £300 of the £1,500 is to pay off a mortgage to a Client of William Medland's & £300 to a Building Society of which he is Solr so that there will be £900 to pay to the Bank, for the security of the Globe which will be given up & which was returned to the Bank as worth £500. When this amount, £900, is paid in my account will be reduced over £2,000 since Michas and I hope I shall by degrees be able still further to reduce it and at the same time pay off £650 a month for the next 3 months to set John's amount right at the Hertford Branch. You must recollect my wants have been great since Michas and for the next 2 months I shall consume 100 qrs of malt a week, this week 120 qrs. What I told you the other day I can now confirm, that I can now see my way very well to go on comfortably without more working capital & more especially if John will assist Charles in the Welsh Brewery. Charles had gone over to Westmill to see about it. I then (if he likes it) shall get clear of John for which I shall be glad as instead of assisting me as he was wont to do, he is my greatest enemy & does what a stranger with common sense & businesslike habits would not do. You will recollect you told him he must be content to get his money by Instalments & this is all I require at his hands. With regard to the Deeds at the Unity I think I can get a party here to advance part of the money but perhaps you know of some one who would do it for 6 or 12 months as I fear the Railway won’t be in a position to take it off my hands for some time. All the calls are swallowed up as fast as made. I should very much like you to come down next week if you can to arrange matters. Benning is very pressing about the disposal of the charges on the property. The authority you signed as merely to lend the Deeds & not to give them up. Mr.Bigg requires the form I have enclosed to be signed. You see I have stated that the account is to be reduced to value of property. I shall be glad to receive this if you have no objection to it by Scarboro & perhaps you will let me know either by him or by post as soon as possible whether you can find a client to advance £1,200 or £1,400 on the "Fox" Deeds".
