  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "The same post that brought your letter also brought one from John & a nice specimen it is of G.Mickley's composition for I can almost swear it is not John's. He is not content with my paying his labor [sic], Rent &c at the Farm amounting since Michas to over £300 & besides he & George continue to have Beer the two accounts of this amounts [sic] to £300. So you see I am gradually liquidating. I have also to meet the Bills, due at the Hertford Bank of £650 a month which is quite sufficient for me to do out of my monthly receipts & I offered to continue to pay off something say £300 a month after the £650 a month is paid. Charles will I think take a share of the Merthyr Brewery & this will enable me to settle with John altogether. I shall only be too glad to get out of his hands as he has done his best to get me into the Bky [Bankruptcy] Court. He knows very well my position at the bank & that I have been obliged to reduce my account there. With regard to Throcking I think he is the only one averse to a public sale. I am quite sure it won't fetch its value unless it is put up. The fact is he has set his mind on purchasing it. I must leave this matter in your hands to get at the wishes of the Family if you have no objection. As with John's new fangled business notions my opinion is of no use. From a letter I received from my mother the other day I had some little consolation. She said that "Caroline was the only one reasonable" that is when talking about me. As for my mother being unhappy about paying Bills I believe you will find she is much more unhappy at the position John has taken. He has had a series of capital years which has made him superior in his own eyes to the rest of us. I settled with Mr.Godfrey & I expect he will forward you transfer. The money came in most opportunely as from one cause or other I have not been able to get in the money I expected to appease the Bank. William Medand has £1,500 to advance me on 4 properties, one of which is deposited at the Bank & as your guarantee overrides it Mr.Bigg requests your signature to the request to deliver up the Deeds. The Deeds of the Globe are deposited for £500 at the Bank. I have written to Mr.Heard about the sale of the Brewery & I saw Mr.Ames today who said he hoped to see the Buildings turn into a Market & that if he were in Mr.Leigh's place he would do it. I have no doubt he will give a push in the right quarter. Please to return Mr.Bigg's letters. the £600 has been taken towards reduction of my account. Next week I hope to reduce it £1,000 more. I am sad to hear your cold is no better. If you require the £300 cashed this month I had better send you another cheque on Luton or I must get an order to have it cashed in London as my limit there is only £150 now. The longer you can keep it the better it will be but I should be sorry for you to be inconvenienced by it".
