  • Scope and Content
From: John Sworder, Bedford Road Brewery, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I was in London yesterday & went to London & Coy Bank they want some arrangement to pay off part of the sum due to them, but they do not wish to do anything harsh. They have found out that their business has not been carried out on Strict Banking Principles. I have been looking out some time for a partner to take off part of the weight of the Dowlais Brewery & am in hopes I shall succeed. This would enable me to reduce my amount considerably, after all it is only a trifle more than this time last year & this is the heaviest time for stock, as I have malt enough to last me till Novr. I expect to hear from H.Vyse tomorrow morning about £4500 which he promised to let me have & the other £500 Messrs Burr & Crabb would take in malt. The Valuatn of the Ale, Beer & Spirits would not amount to more than £2000 at Michas & not even so much perhaps if they have a good run for the next 3 months. With regard to the loss on the Brewery, I do not think that would be very great & it must be recollected that you Enhance the value of the one Brewery very considerably & a great saving is annually made by conducting a large business in one Brewery instead of in two. I send this by David Peck who is going to Hertford this Evg. If you can come over again tomorrow Evg or one day next week it would be very advisable to do so. The Railway will I hope be opened next month, That will no doubt give a great stimulus to the trade of the Town & be a vast benefit. Hitherto we have been quite shut in as it were".
