  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Bedford Road Brewery, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I return you Robert's letter which I found on my return. I suppose you do not know anyone with £3 or £4000 who would take ½ of the Dowlais Brewery, it is likely to be a first rate concern, but it requires more capital. I shall be glad if you will return the Draft agreement as soon as possible. Benning wanted it on Wednesday to look over it again as it was got up in such a hurry to let me have it on Friday Evg last. I should have been glad to have seen you down again the week to have gone thoroughly into the affair, but I think perhaps Medcalf will be able to satisfy you on all points. There is plenty of time allowed to realize some of the bulky property & also if thought necessary to get a Partner to join me, but I am quite certain of this that the more you consider of it, the more desirable you will think it to retain the whole in hand by means of borrowing what capital is required at 4 per ct. If I could only get out well with the Dowlais Brewery I fancy I should have sufficient floating capital to work both concerns & more especially if Barley is at a moderate price next year. The Barley purchased this year stands in more than £2000 over the average of years. I have had another letter from Mr.Bigg, the Bank appears to want the cash the letter is as follows "I have this day received instructions from the Directors to inform you that they require a definite arrangement to be entered into forthwith for the liquidation of your account. They consider that if your friends are In a position to purchase Mr.Burr's Brewery they are also able to make a satisfactory arrangement with regard to the account. Under these circumstances I would suggest you making an appointment with our Directors for a meeting with them together with Mr.T.Sworder of Hertford so as to arrive at a satisfactory understanding with them in the matter. In the meantime my instructions are positive as to any increase of liability that the greatest exactness is requisite in not drawing in excess of limit. Trusting you will be able to come to a satisfactory understanding I am &c". I have since seen Mr.Bigg & he has advised me to meet the Board in London on Thursday, the day of our Railway meeting. I told him I thought you would not like to go & also that you would not like it after giving the guarantee. He says they are now dreadfully particular in consequence of what has been brought to light in other Banks & that they require all accounts kept in banking style. I shall go on Thursday but I should like to have your opinion as to a partner which I said I should get supposing I did not come to an arrangement with you as regards taking Burr's concern. I told Mr.Bigg that Mr.Burr's concern & my own were quite distinct & that I did not intend drawing any money from my own business to purchase that & for the best of reasons that I could not".
