  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I will send you a Cheque as soon as I possibly can, but just at present I am at my limit, but I am trying all I can to get in money from Customers. It is however a difficult task just now, as this month is about as dull as any month during the year. Messrs Burr & Crabb have written to me to say they think they shall be in a position to let me know whether they will offer the Brewery to me at a reduced sum next week when they are down. No one has been down about it, so I expect they are consulting some London men as to whether they ought to ask a premium for the business. I understand the London & County Bank here are on the lookout for suitable premises to build a new bank, as the present one is much too small for the increasing business. One of the houses near their present bank & abutting on I would probably sell well for that purpose. You must recollect that the Interest will not be required on the whole capital, as there is one Brewery to be disposed of with the consequent expenses besides 3 or 4 of the high priced houses. I regret to hear Uncle John has been opposed. I have neither seen or heard anything about the Meeting and I did not care much about seeing that part of the paper as I was afraid he would be opposed. Long John is doing remarkably well at Dowlais - he says the sales last month were 302 barrels amounting to £713.0.0 - this concern altho is doing well yet it has taken more money out of my business than I can well spare, but I hope now I shall be in receipt of something considerable monthly from this house. We are now all well I have been suffering very much from jaw ache [?] Ellen joins me in kind love to Aunt & yourself".
