  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am sorry to hear your old Horse was so lame - it makes a long journey so very tedious. I can add "Jr" to the Agt when I next see you. I suppose being in Beds & getting gray in the bargain I forget that I am still Juvenile. The Deeds deposited with the Bank are as follows The Queens Hotel, Luton Globe P.H. do Green Man Do. Dunstable Rose & Crown Do Woburn Deeds of Thomas Bigg of Luton held as security for advance £200 Lease of the Dowlais Brewery I had Messrs Burr & Crabb to see me on Thursday, when & shewed them over my Brewery - they were surprized it was so large & thought it very compact. I quite thought they had come to offer me the Brewery at a reduced sum, but it was to say that they had been thro the books & found that the trade had been considerably better than they had represented it to me. They did 5000 barrels last year & if the trade is as good the next 6 mos as it was the last they will do near 6000 barrels this year endg Sept next. The last 6 mos was within 100 barrels of my trade. Mr.Crabb was to see a party in London on Friday and I fancy, if he finds that they ought not to ask an additional sum beyond their Valn as Goodwill they will offer it to me at their Valuatn which is abt £45,000. I told them they had better at once send the next applicant down to test the value of the Brewery and if he were anxious to purchase I might perhaps agree with him to join my Brewery to that. I enclose the Valn. I should be glad to have it back as soon as you have done with it. You can ask C.Young what he thinks of the plan of selling off some of the expensive houses in the heart of the Town. In that event there wd not be much chance of others being opened as property is so very valuable. The land attached to the 2 out town houses might perhaps be sold with advantage, I have been very queer since you left, the cold weather did not suit me at all while under physic"
