  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I enclose you Messrs Burr & Crabb's ultimatum and they require a positive answer on the 29th inst. I send it you thinking that you may perhaps think it advisable to see Medcalf on the subject previous to your coming on Saturday. I have been to London today & called on Mason & Sons Brewery Valuers, they informed me it was their usual practice to value the goodwill with each house & nothing extra is allowed for goodwill except where there is a trade, independent of the fixed trade. They however said that in my case they should advise my giving £2000 or £3000 as goodwill rather than let the chance slip, as the working of the two concerns together would save not only a considerable annual sum, but perhaps a very active competition, which would reduce the value somewhat of my present Brewery - whereas by adding Burr's trade to it, it would be considerably enhanced in value".
