  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I quite agree with you that it is of no use for you to renounce. I am in no hurry to be admitted being very short of the needful having paid Bennett £1,000 on account without any money in hand to pay with. He could not get on without it & I thought he would not be then in a particular hurry about settling the purchase. I hope you will be able to get someone to take Archer's mortgage as John is also very short of money. He has overdrawn at the Bank considerably, besides which he owes us £1,000 which we paid into his account some time back. Corn is ruinously low and it is almost a pity to sell it at present as it may get up in price in the course of a month or two. What is to become of farmers if the present prices continue I know not, but I think they cannot possibly stand up against the times. A very respectable man, a Carpenter, wants to borrow £180 on a Cottage Barn & piece of land on the latter he intends to build a house for the sale of beer. The situation is good & if I can get the money, we shall secure the house. We will guarantee the payment of the money if required as in Cook's case. If you could advance £180 he could build two houses as there is plenty of frontage. There is not a Cottage to be let in the town. I was sorry you were out when I was at Hertford last week, perhaps I shall be over again in the course of a week or so. I shall be glad of an answer by W.Medland who goes to Hertford tomorrow I believe whether you can advance the 130 as part of the money will be wanted next week in the Settlement of the purchase. The pur money is £90".
