  • Scope and Content
These papers deal mainly with the suit, Godley (vicar of Shillington) versus the Inhabitants of Upper Gravenhurst, concerning the church and tithes of Upper Gravenhurst, (late 17th cent.), and it is possible that the earlier documents, which include an inquisition and petitions regarding the charitable uses of the property of the Manor of Schepeho, were produced as evidence in this suit. The vicar of Shillington asserted that Upper Gravenhurst church was only a chapel of ease to Shillington, and that he was entitled to the tithes of Gravenhurst, and to the profits issuing from lands belonging to the Manor of Schepeho, which were to be employed for the use of the church. See also P17/25/14 for depositions (copies) 1549.
