  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I hope it there was not any foundation for what you have heard respecting Uncle John. I have no doubt he is & has been short of money owing to his horrid system of Keeping so much stock in hand even when he has had a good chance of getting out. He never ought to have kept the hops he alludes to as he once had the chance of making £1 per pocket profit about a year ago. Now I dare say he will have to make a sacrifice of £2 or £3 if he sells them. I should think he has a good deal owing him from some of the Brewers & however short of money he may be, I should think he has still plenty of property left. I should like very much to get Bennett's Business settled it would be a great relief to me as he is now very anxious & pressing for a settlement. We have paid him £2,500 on account & to complete we shall want £7,500 more which will make up the £10,000. If it was not for the Westmill a/c owing us so much nearly £2,000 I could have money to pay off some of Bennett's mortgages & so get the Deeds into my own possession. Perhaps you can manage to get a temporary loan on Deposit of the Throcking Deeds for £2 or 3,000 at 4 per cent if so it would not matter about letting Archer's Mortgage remain. As it is it is not so pleasant to pay the Bankers 5 per cent when you have a mortgage at only 4 per ct. It would be a good think [sic] to sell Cornell's Farm but I suppose at present it would be difficult to meet with a purchaser. If you can manage it I should be glad of some money as soon as you can manage to let me have it as the £500 I paid Bennett this week was an overdraw at the Bank. As Barley is now very low we are getting as fast as possible our year's consumption already we have bought nearly 900 quarters. There cannot be much harm done buying at present prices the average being about 23/- per Qr".
