  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am much obliged by your sending me cheque for £4,500 which I did not get till this m'g as I went over to Westmill on Saturday ev'g. I was however back here to bkft at 8 o'clock. Bennett is a horrible slow coach, I have been over to spur him up several times. I have been today. He does not at all like to part with it, but his wife won't let him keep it even if we were to give it up. She wears the smalls. Today she said she should like to shake him as he was so stupid. Everyone seems to think it is a capital thing & no doubt we should be able to do a much larger business than he does. He himself says we shall double it in a small time. Mr.Medland will most likely have Bennett's House if we take it & so look after the Dunstable private trade a little. Bennett scarcely has any as the people cannot drink his swill. I have agreed to take Luton Bury frm the 28th March next of Mr.Burgess. It is larger place than we want but there seems to be no chance of getting a respectable house & perhaps we might have lost this, as the present tenant has not the wherewith to pay any rent & several parties would like to have it. I am much obliged to you for your kind invite which I should much like to accept, but business must be attended to. What with one thing or other I have my hands full just now & hardly seem able to get away for a day. This week 2 Engineers are coming down to look over the Brewery to give an estimate of the cost of certain alterations we shall require in the Brewery. Hoping to see you soon & with kind love to Aunt & Children".
