  • Scope and Content
From: Robert How, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder [?] "I received your instructions through Mr.Everitt Feb 20th to get up the arrears of Crown Inn Luton, King’s Arms, Wheel Plough, Windsor Castle Luton, Half Moon Pepperstock, Plough Kensworth, Crown & Globe Dunstable to Michaelmas last. I find the "Crown" Luton p[ai]d to Michaelmas "King's Arms" ditto Windsor Castle ditto Wheelplough I have called here and find the tenant has left about 4 months before Michaelmas, and his son now occupies the house, who says he paid 4 months rent at Michaelmas at the Brewhouse, and the father says he did some work for the Brewery towards the rent owing by him, so I suppose you must look to the Brewery for this will you please say if I am to apply at the Brewery. Globe Dunstable After a great deal of trouble I have got rid of Samwells and let this house to Mr.Robert Jones at £15 per annum, he is to take his beer from the Brewery, and I suppose they will take that with the other Houses. late Crown Dunstable I am informed by Mr.Chambers that he owed one quarter's rent at the time he left and has paid that to Mr.Medland, I have applied to Mr.Medland for the money but have not succeeded in getting it. I have now let the house to Mr.J.Limbrey at £21 per annum Plough Kensworth I have been promised rent from King but he has brought me only about 30/- and a quantity of property and Land tax receipts and has promised to bring me more to make up half a years rent, but I hear some person has advised him not to pay any more rent as someone is going to put in a claim for the property. I think the better way will be to put in an execution and force payment, please let me have your instructions. Half Moon Pepperstock I have been to this house and Church the tenant says he has paid some rent at the Brewery and has promised to bring the balance to me and to go with me to the Brewery and make the rent right to Michaelmas, but he has failed to do so. I expect him every day. Old Brewery I have seen all these tenants Mr.Brown paid up to Michaelmas last, also Mr.Drewitt, Millard pays yearly and I have rec'd his rent to March 25th. Payne paid J.Ironmonger to Jan 28th and has paid me from that time. Messrs Vyse paid Ironmonger to Oct 31st £4-15-0 and have given up the premises".
