    Abstract of Thomas & Robert Sworder to Crown & Anchor public house, brewery and other hereditaments in Luton (I) Release and Conveyance 3 Oct 1843 Parties: (i) John Crichton Stuart, 2nd Marquis of Bute and 7th Earl of Dumfries; (ii) John Gray of Luton, builder Reciting: - lease & release of 25/26 Apr 1831 (1) Rev.John Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln; William Stuart, esquire [trustees of marriage settlement of (ii) of 14/15 Jul 1818); (2) (i) and Maria, Marchioness of Bute and Countess of Dumfries; (3) John Gray; (4) Charles Austin in which (1) and (2) conveyed (a)-(b) to (3) with (4) as his trustee for 81 - (i) had lent (ii) 700 on mortgage; - Marchioness of Bute had died without issue, all land subject to the marriage settlement thus becoming solely vested in (i) Operative Part: - (ii) repaid 700 to (i) who conveyed (a)-(c) to (ii) Property: [as shown on accompanying plan] (a) 35 poles of ground in Luton near Red Cow, being corner of close of pasture called Lancrofts or Longcrofts bounded: W by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Clay; (b) meadow, lately part of common land called Great Moor adjoining (a) to E and containing 0a 2r 12p - (a)-(b) bounded: S by highway from Luton to Horsepool Bridges; NE by River Lea; W by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Clay; (c) Crown & Anchor with stables etc. and another messuage in occupation of (ii) recently erected (II) Release of 17 Jul 1844 Parties: (i) John Crichton Stuart, Marquis of Bute and Earl of Dumfries; (ii) John Gray of Luton, builder Operative Part: - (i) released (a) to (ii) for 5 Property: (a) 1.5 poles of land in Luton adjoining Horse Pool Bridges and extending next to River Lea NE 15 ft and NW next to land of (ii) purchased on 3 Oct 1843; 46 ft bounded S by road from Luton to Horse Pool Bridges (III) Mortgage of 15 Mar 1847 Parties: (i) John Gray of Luton, builder; (ii) Thomas Riches of Uxbridge [Middlesex], gentleman Operative Part: - (i) borrowed 2,000 at 5% interest from (ii) secured on Property: (a) 35 poles of ground in Luton near Red Cow, being corner of close of pasture called Lancrofts or Longcrofts bounded: W by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Clay; (b) meadow, lately part of common land called Great Moor adjoining (a) to E and containing 0a 2r 12p - (a)-(b) bounded: S by highway from Luton to Horsepool Bridges; NE by River Lea; W by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Clay; (c) 1.5 poles of land in Luton adjoining Horse Pool Bridges and extending next to River Lea NE 15 ft and NW next to (a)-(b) 46 ft bounded S by road from Luton to Horse Pool Bridges; (d) Crown & Anchor with stables etc. with brewhouse and malthouse and other buildings erected by (i) in occupation of John Everett Covenant to keep buildings etc. insured (IV) Mortgage of 1 May 1848 Parties: (i) John Gray of Luton, brewer; (ii) John Anstee of Chalton, farmer Reciting: - (III); - mortgage of 2 Jun 1845 from (i) to (ii) for £250; - mortgage of 13 Jul 1846 from (i) to (ii) for £500; - mortgage of 15 Jun 1847 from (i) to (ii) for £250; - £2,500 remained due under (III) but all interest had been paid; - £1,000 plus an arrear of interest remained due to (ii); - (ii) had agreed to lent a further £2,000 to (i) Operative Part: - (i) conveyed (a) to (ii) as security for a total of £3,000 Property: (a) land near Red Cow, Luton being a corner of Lancrofts alias Longcrofts and divided therefrom by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Cley on W and containing 35 poles; (b) piece of meadow, lately part of commonable land called Great Moor adjoining (a) and containing 0a 2r 13p; (a)-(b) bounded S by highway from Luton to Horsepool bridges; W by new road from Luton to Barton-le-Cley; NW by SW bank of river; (c) piece of land in Luton of 1.5 poles adjoining Horsepool Bridges extending next river on NE 15ft and NW next to land of (i) 40ft bounded: S by road from Luton to Horsepool Bridges; (d) messuage, beerhouse, malthouse and other buildings lately erected by John Gray on part of (a)-(c) (e) Crown & Anchor in occupation of John Everitt built by (i) on part of (a)-(c); (f) vats, coppers, coolers, mash tubs and other brewery plant of (i) in his brewhouse
