  • Title
Case Between William Conquest of Jersey and James Hankin of St Ives, Huntingdon. James Hankin was a Tenant of William Conquest and was charged with clandestinely removing from the house certain goods from the house with intent to defraud his Landlord. George Chapman received the rents for William Conquest. On 14 July 1881 there was a arrear of 29/- due for rent. On 17 July he received James Hankin's key by post. When he went to the house he found it shut up and empty. Superintendent William Bedlow of Biggleswade went to the house with a warrant to search for the goods and chattels on account of the debt but could find nothing sufficient to levy. He understood that Hankin had sent a pony and cart and other effects away a week or two previous so that they should not be seized for this debt. Rent due £1.19.0, Costs 16/6. If not paid the sums should be levied by distress of the Goods and Chattels of James Hankin.
