    Indenture of Feoffment Parties (i) John Bates and his wife Elizabeth as X740/19(ii). (ii) John Penington of Bedford, gent. (iii) John Witt and James Franklin, present Overseers of the Poor of Wootton. (iv) Thomas Money of Kempston, gent., John Hill the elder of Wootton, gent., and John Hill the younger of Wootton, yeoman. Recitals That (i) 'hath by misfortune been reduced to poverty and is become unable to maintain or support himself or his said wife and family and they have all been a charge to the said parish of Wootton for two years last past dureing which time they have had and received of the Overseers of the Poor of Wootton... in weekly and other sums all together the full sum of two and twenty pounds as appears by a note under the hand of John Bates.' That JB being seised in fee simple of and in the lands and hereditaments mentioned below, it was agreed that he should convey the same in such manner and to such uses, intents, trusts, and other purposes as are expressed and in consideration thereof the parishioners of Wootton agreed to allow and pay JB for the absolute purchase thereof £37 (including the £22 to be part of the purchase money, and the residue thereof was to be paid as follows: £2 10s. upon the execution of these presents to pay the debts of JB now due and owing and the remainder to be paid by the Overseers of the Poor of Wootton at 5s. per week,until the whole shall be expended, for maintaining JB and his wife and family and keeping them from becoming a charge to the parish so long as the remaining purchase money shall last and in case JB/EB shall both die or become able to maintain themselves without any allowance by the parish (and in that case shall give good security to indemnify the said parish of, from and against all charges, costs and expenses which shall or may happen to them by reason of JB/EB being inhabitants there) before all the said remaining purchase money shall be paid as aforesaid, then so much as shall not then be paid in weekly sums shall go and be paid to JB, EB their executors or administrators for his, her and their own proper benefit. Operative part Feoffment (grant, bargain, sell, enfeoff and confirm) from (i), (in consideration of £22 already paid to JB as aforesaid, £2 10s. paid to (i) by (iii), £12 10s. to be paid to him in the manner aforesaid and 5s. paid to (i) by (ii)), by the direction of (iii), to (iv) of: (a) messuage, cottage or tenement situate in Wootton now or late in the occupation of JB with the orchard belonging and adjoining thereto: viz. as in X740/19(a). Habendum: to (iv) and their heirs and assigns to and for the several uses mentioned viz. to the use of (ii), his executors, administrators and assigns for 500 years sans impeachment of waste (subject to the proviso below), remainder to the only use and behoof of (iv), their heirs etc. for ever. in trust nevertheless and to the intent and purpose that (iv) shall from time to time convey and dispose of the same premises and also of the rents, issues and profits thereof as the same shall arise. to such person(s) and for such estate(s), intents and purposes as the Minister and Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor or the major part of them shall from time to time direct and for want of such direction then for and towards the payment of such sums as shall at any time be charged upon the inhabitants of Wootton for the relief of the poor in the parish to abate their poor rates therein. Proviso that if the Overseers of the Poor pay (i) and the survivor of them the weekly sum of 5s. until the sum of £12 10s. shall be paid and expended (if either of them live so long) and also if (iii) (in case (i) shall both die or become able to support him/her/themselves sans being a charge to the parish and in that case shall give security as aforesaid, before all the money shall be paid) shall pay so much thereof as shall be then remaining to (i) or the survivor of them or the executors of such survivor then the term of 500 years shall be void and cease.
