Warrant for the reception of Benjamin Bull into the Lunatic Asylum for the County of Herts at Arlesey under the Criminal Lunatics Act 1867. Benjamin Bull having been convicted at Hertford Assizes on the 3rd July 1863 of arson and sentenced to ten years penal servitude. Schedule gives Bull's date of birth as 1839. He is described as delicate and puny only 4ft 11 in height, childish and 'easily induced by other patients to do absurd things- cannot tell his age correctly and says he is 20...is sometimes led into mischeif by others and seems to have a propensity to commit petty thefts but is easily managed'.
