    Deposition: Thomas Merrill, Staploe, lab. Wm. Welbye made a hole in ceiling of his chamber, let himself down and attacked him with knife as he lay in bed; would have murdered him had not Eliz. Barcocke come to the door. John Thurrowgood, Eaton Socon, surgeon. Dressed throat wound of Th. Merrill; it was made with intent to murder. The Information of Thomas Merrill of Over Staploe in the parrish of Eaton Socon in the County of Bedford laborer taken uppon his oath the 13th day of March in the yeare of our Lord 1679 This Informant saith that on Shrove tuesday the Fower and twentieth day of February last past about twelve of the clock at night this Informant lieing in his bed and his chamber locked to him, and the key in the lock in the inward side of the doore next to his said chamber, William Welbye a servant in the howse broke into his said chamber from the topp of the seeling, where hee made a hole and let himselfe downe, and came immediately to this Informant and seized uppon his throat as hee lay on his back in his bed and the said Welbye with his knife cut this Informant on his throat and stopped his wind that hee could not speak, and this Informant endeavouring with his hands to defend his throat had his handes cut by the said Welbye and doth beleive that the said Welbye would have murthered him this Informant, had not Elisabeth the wife of William Barcock came to him this Informants chamber doore uppon the noise that shee heard in his this Informants chamber Taken and acknowledged The day and yeare above Written Before mee W Foster The marke of Thomas Merrill The Information of John Thurrowgood of the parrish of Eaton Socon in the County of Bedford Chyrurgeon taken uppon his oath the 13th day of March in the yeare of our Lord 1679 Annoque RR Caroli Sodi Tricesimo Secundo This Informant saith that uppon Wednesday the Five and twentieth day of February last past about two of the clocke in the morneing, hee this Informant was sent for to dresse the wounds of Thomas Merrill of Over Staploe, whome, (at his comming) hee this Informant found very much wounded by haveing his throat and his handes cut, and uppon the search of his throat hee this Informant found the grissell of the said Merrills throat cut through, but the inward skin not touched, and this Informant doth verily beleive that whosoever made that wound did intend to have murthered the said Thomas Merrill And further saith not Taken and acknowledged The day & yeare above written Before mee W Foster Jo Thorowgood
