    Thomas Butcher otherwise called Thomas Fermer of Shortmead in the parish of Bykylleswad made 18 Apr. 154[?] pr. 12 May 1543. Burial in the churchyard of St. Andrew of Bykeleswayd. To the high altar 12d.; to the parish church for repairs 3s. 4d.. To wife Phylysse his house in Shortmead with all lands in the parish of Bykyllswade for her lifetime, and on her death property to go to testator's son Wylliam and his heirs. To wife also 2 milch kine and one steer, 5 horses, 2 carts with a plough and the harness going with them and the crops in the fields, so that after her death she leaves the horses, carts, plough and harness to testator's son Wylliam. To son Richard 2 oxen, 6 quarters of barley and one sheep. To son John a cow, 6 quarters of barley and one sheep. To daughter Elisabeth a mattress, 3 pair of sheets, one coverlet, one bolster, a pillow, a bullock, a sheep, 6 quarters of barley and one great brass pan. To daughter Mary a cow, a sheep, 6 quarters of barley, and a pair of seets. To daughter Jone a cow, a sheep, 6 quarters of barley and a pair of sheets. To John Butcher the son of William Butcher one brown heifer. Sons Richard and John to receive their legacies at the age of 20. Daughters Elisibeth, Jone and Mary to receive their legacies at the age of 18. John son of William Butcher to receive his heifer on testator's death.. Should son Richard die under the age of 20, then his heirs are to be John, Elisibeth, Jone and Mary. The survivors are to be the heirs of any child dying under due age. He leaves half a quarter of malt to fund repairs to the highway in Shortmeade St.. The residue to his wife Phylysse, executrix, and to John Bayes executor, and to the latter 3s. 4d.. William Hawle of Bekylswade to be overseer, to whom 3s. 4d.. Witnesses sir Bryane Lume', William Hawle, Richard Kocke. Note that Thomas Butcher has surrendered to William Hawle, before the same witnesses, both the free and the copyhold property to the uses of his will.
