- TitleBlack, Bordeaux to Grantham, Madrid Received Bill on London for £48.6.11. from Grantham. Last vintage not more than 1/3 usual quantity, poor quality, wanting body, ripeness and mellowness, prices out of all reason. Still have wines of 1771, 1772 and 1773, the first being the best "tho' I could wish they were older, but such are not to be had". Prices for this range from £28 to £15 a dozen, the lowest "a sound good common wine". The white £12 to £15 a dozen. To send by land cost usually £10 per cwt. to Bayonne, currently much higher due to mortality among cattle. By ship to Bilbao only way, but involves delays. Pleased had a fellow of "Dublin Colledge" there a few days, from Toulouse", who joined my eldest daughter in matrimony to a Mr. John Chambers, brother of Sir Wm. Chambers of the Board of Works. The gentleman was many years in China, where he acquired a large fortune, and is a man of the best character, sense etc."
