- TitleGrantham, St. John's College, Cambridge to Baroness Grantham, Whitehall, London He arrived safely, and found his rooms pleasant and comfortable, which he describes in detail. He was introduced to Dr Pearce and Mr Kempsthorne, and dined in the latter's rooms on the first night. Next day he went to St. Mary's, the university church, where he was introduced to the Master of Pembroke, the Vice Chancellor, and afterwards dined with Dr Pearce, (Master of Jesus). Today he is to give a feast in the Hall for everybody in college, after which he says he will be "perfectly bored, tired and stupid". He has no gown yet, and has borrowed one from the tailor. He describes the gown as having, 'Pudding Sleeves', which he thinks will be cumbersome. He feels well equipped in his new lodgings, and tells her, "remind Aunt Bell that when [she] comes to see me I will certainly have a Boiled Chicken and Bread Pudding for her dinner".
