  • Title
Grantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (No 36, draft) M. de Rayneval has informed Grantham of the resolution of the French Cabinet regarding Dominica. His Majesty suggests that Tobago should remain in the hands of France and that the East India Company should use their influence to obtain for France the districts of the Nabob of Arcot and the Rajah of Tanjore round Pondicherry and Karical. Alternatively, on France giving up any exchange of Dominica, a district between Alampana and Panna round Pondicherri and Karical should be obtained from the Country Powers. The East India Company can only exercise their influence to obtain them. Hopes St. Vincent may not be an obstacle to peace. The King has a full right to expect it to be returned with the other West Indian possessions.
