- TitleGrantham, Whitehall to Fitzherbert, Paris (private, copy) Has reason to think that Spain wants France to adjust the article of Gibraltar by some cessions to Britain, and to reimburse France with something else e.g. to give France the Spanish share of Hispaniola if France would give up some of her islands to Britain. Propositions likely to be made for an exchange for Gibraltar are: 1st Porto Rico, 2nd Martinico and St. Lucia, 3rd Guadeloupe and Dominica. Exchange to be accompanied by restitution. Uneasy about the stipulations to both America and France about the Fisheries. The Americans should be confined to the same parts as the British. Has had a fall from the step of a carriage and is a good deal bruised. Met Fitzherbert's brother at a meeting of Barbados merchants.
