- TitleWalpole, Lisbon to Grantham, St. James's (private) Thanks Grantham for his private letter of 28th January. Lord Mountstuart's being promised the Embassy of Madrid is "an unsurmountable difficulty". He is glad Mr Liston is to accompany Lord Mountstuart. Grantham was right in "reconciling Munro to his former employment". Consulships in Spain are but "small pittances". He would like to see Mr Lempriere of Faro rewarded - he has a large family and has suffered "many disagreeable reproaches in this last war... on account of his Zeal for our service". Congratulates Grantham on the peace. Walpole has been speaking to M. de Mello regarding the sending of ships bound for the Spanish commodities in South America to North America. Walpole told de Mello of the illegality of that commerce, despite the terms of the Treaty of 1654. He also spoke of Portuguese conduct regarding British commerce and left Mellow with "some apprehensions from the Stipulations in the preliminaries in regard to the French commerce".
