- TitleGrantham, St. James's to Sir William Hamilton (No 6 Draft) Acknowledges receipt of letters. Prince Caramanico requested that some Neapolitan officers who were on board the French fleet under M. de Grasse and who were probably made prisoners in action of 12th April be released. Grantham told the Neapolitan minister that if they were taken, they would be set free immediately. These officers and others in the service of Naples are "distributed in the different Fleets of the Maritime Powers" and by Hamilton's account of the Marine at Naples it appears that "His Sicilian Majesty is very attentive to the Establishment and Increase of that part of the Strength of his Kingdoms". The "rejoicing at Madrid upon taking the island of Ratan affords matter of Entertainment, for nothing but the Spanish style of representing their own Exploits, could possibly have assigned any Importance to that Capture". The King was concerned on hearing of the "great loss" which Hamilton has suffered.
