    Copy probate of will of 24 May 1828 of Joseph Lucas prepared by C.C.Lucas of 1 Trinity Place, Charing Cross, London - to his friends William Brown of Hitchin [Hertfordshire], baker, William Exton of Grove Mill, Hitchin, banker and Joseph Sharples of Hitchin, gentleman as trustees for sale - his piece of freehold land in Ippollitts [Hertfordshire] in occupation of Abraham Folls; one freehold and two copyhold lots of farm pasture adjoining each other in Brackhill Farm, Earith [Huntingdonshire] in occupation of George Purchase; real and personal estate at Pirton [Hertfordshire] in occupation of Mary, widow of William Hodson and John Weedon; - to his friends William Brown, William Exton and Joseph Sharples as trustees for sale - half the freehold estates owned by he and his brother William, both purchased by them and devised them by their father as tenants in common (his brother agreeing to release the testator's half share after the testator's death); - to his friends William Brown, William Exton and Joseph Sharples 50 each provided they act as trustees; - to Sarah Woolston ("now living with me") 50; - to Thomas Marsh, his clerk, 50; - to John Lenton, his servant at Offley Grange, 10; - to William Hunt the elder, Francis Smith the elder and George Westwood 10 each; - Mary Valentine and Sarah Pack, his household servants 10 each; - to his sons Joseph, Charles, Thomas Woolston and Jeffery 1,500 each; - to his son Edward 500 (he already having had 1,000); - to his daughters Sarah and Phebe 1,000 each; - to his son Joseph the mahogany wardrobe in his own use, his encyclopaedia, concordance and family Bible; - to Sarah and Phebe the remainder of the books, household furniture, plate, linen, china etc.; - residue of personal estate to William Brown, William Exton and Joseph Sharples upon trust; - residue of personal estate and money from sales of land, after debts and legacies above, to be shared equally between his seven children Joseph, Edward, Charles, Thomas Woolston, Jeffery, Sarah and Phebe, William Brown, William Exton and Joseph Sharples acting as guardians for his children under 21 - witnesses: Thomas Barton Beck of Hitchin, gentleman, Robert Bloome of Hitchin, cooper and Thomas Davies of Hitchin, painter Affidavit of 13 Jan 1833 of Stafford Allen of 8 Cowper Street, Old Street Road [Middlesex] that: he was a Quaker; he knew Joseph Lucas for several years before his death and recognised his handwriting in his will as genuine especially in relation to the pencilling in of the names of William Brown, William Exton and Joseph Sharples Affidavit of 4 Feb 1833 of John Thompson of Hitchin, draper, also a Quaker, affirming the same as Stafford Allen Probate in PCC 7 Feb 1833 "Sixty eight pounds 19/- returned on the Ground of Debts - G.W.Bishop, Probate Office, 5 Oct/55" "The stamp for 350 has been cancelled and a stamp for 250 substituted in lieu thereof under authority 55 George 3 c.184140 A.Hindes, Supervisor of Stamps" Note that at courts of 8 Jun 1837 and 16 Nov 1837 for Manors of Pirton and Pirton Doddingsells and Manor of Rectory of Pirton with Ickleford probate was presented by William Hanscombe and James King and by James King and John Throssell
