  • Title
    Folio 160 - Thomas Jarveis of Staplowe in parish of Eton [Socon] made 20 May pr. 12 July 1559. Soul to almighty God and the holy company of heaven, and body to be buried in churchyard of Tilbrooke. To mother church of Lincoln 2d.; to high altar in Eton for tithes forgotten 12d.; to the bells there 4d.. To wife Joane house where testator dwells with all meadow, pasture, common and feedings that belong to the house (but not including his land) while she remains single, until testator’s son William Jerveys comes to age of 21 years, and should wife remarry before son comes to age of 21, then property held by wife to go to son William and his heirs for ever. Testator’s brother John Jerveys to occupy all testator’s arable land, paying rent to testator’s wife Joane during her widowhood at the rate of 8d. per acre, but if Joane remarry then rent to son William. To wife two of his best milch beasts and “the Rewarde for her that was keylde” and 4 sheep, testator’s household stuff and all his wood already felled in his yard. Wife not to fell or cut down wood on the said ground, but executors to use it to repair house. To his three daughters Elizabethe, Marrion and Agnes the house in the Forthende that testator bought of his father-in-law William Caxton with all that goes with it. House can be sold by executors and the money arising divided equally between the daughters, which they will get on their respective days of marriage, and should any die before they marry, then her share go to the survivors. To his daughter Elizabeth his best bullock; to daughter Agnes the second bullock. To son Thomas and his heirs for ever the 7 roods of land which testator bought of his father-in-law and £4 in money which is in testator’s press, and testator wishes that his brother William shall keep son Thomas and his stock until the boy comes to the age of 21. His brother William to have 40s. of the said £4 whether son Thomas live or die, and if the son should die under the age of 21 then the rest of the £4 and the land to be divided among his other children then living. To children of his brother John Nottis 4d. each. Should wife wish to let testator’s house then his brother John Jarveys be the preferred tenant. To son Thomas three “giste” sheep and to son William a ewe and a lamb. Residue to wife Joane. His executors to be William Jarveys and John Jarveis his brothers, and each to have 20d.. Richard Wrighte to be supervisor, he to have 12d.. Witnesses John Notte, Thomas Turnor and Olyver Denne.
