  • Title
    Folio 116 - John Smythe alias Cowper of Bromham made 17 July pr. 16 Sept. 1557. “Firste and principally I bequeth my soule unto christ Jesue my maker and Redymer in whose and by the merittesof whosse blessed passion is all my hole truste of cleane remission and forgyvenes of all my synes and my body to be bured in the parishe churche of Bromham afforesayd”. To mother church of Lincoln 4d. and for “my mortary after the lawes of the Reamle and the holy churche in that case provided”. To wife Dorothey testator’s lease of his farm of Bromhame Grange with the crop of corn and hay in order to pay the rents and to keep the house. To Dorothey also testator’s lease of a house in the parish of St. Pole in Bedford where one Robert Smythe now dwells which lease is in the hands of Richard Sampsone to the use of Dorothey for term of years, and should Dorothey die before the end of the lease, then it is to pass to Edmunde the son of testator’s daughter . To testator’s eldest son Raffe Smythe and to the heirs of his body after the death of testator’s wife Dorothey the tenement with all the lands, meadows and pastures and appurtenances which property testator’s sister Alis Russell now dwells in , which tenement lies in the parish of St. Maries in Bedford in Potters Strett, and also a tenement in Fenleke in the parish of Carington with all lands etc., which Mother Mayne now occupies, and should Raffe die without any issue of his body, then this to go to testator’s youngest son Edmund and to the heirs of his body. Should Edmund have no issue and die after the death of testator’s wife Dorothey, then the property to remain to testator’s sister Alis Russell and to her right heirs for ever. To eldest son Raffe Smythe a silver pot gilt with a cover and 6 silver spoons with gilt “knyppes” at the ends of the same spoons; a standing cupboard of “crispanell” work, half a garnish of pewter vessels of the best, that is to say 6 platters, 6 dishes and 6 saucers, all of one mark, and testator’s secon featherbed, and the second of everything belonging to it. To testator’s youngest son Edmund a silver salt parcel gilt with a cover and a silver goblet parcel gift with a cover and testator’s best standing bed with the hangings of the same, and the best featherbed and the best of every thing belonging to it. To Ceisse Herris a ewe and a lamb and 3s. 4d.. To testator’s cousin Alis Cowper a ewe and a lamb or else a silver spoon, she to have the choice, and to each of her children a ewe and a lamb. To Jasper Russell a ewe and a lamb. To the “trestill arche” of Bydenham bridge 3s. 4d., and to Motte’s wife of Fenlake in the parish of Carington a ewe and a lamb. Residue to wife Dorothey, executrix, and to Harry Lawghton of Bedford, executor, he to have 6s. 8d., and sir John Magott parson of the church of St. Maries in Bedford and Richard Sampson of Byddenham to be the supervisors, each to have 5s..
