- Scope and ContentSoul to almighty God, our blessed lady St. Mary, and all the company of heaven, and burial in the churchyard of Sonden. To high altar for tithes forgotten 2d.. To son William testator’s copyhold land in Sonden, but wife Elizabeth is to have out of the copyhold lands 5 acres tilled ready to her hand each year during her lifetime at the charge of son William, she always to make her choice at the fallow each year, and she is to have the Newe Barne to lay her corn and hay, and son William to carry all such corn as is grown on the said 5 acres, and to carry wife’s hay. Wife to have the chamber where she and testator lie with the loft over the hall and to have free coming and going in to the hall to the fire without any hindrance from William or his wife, and son William to bear the cost. Testator’s wife to have also the close on the north side of the house, and to have two beasts and one hog on the common, and to have in the yard half a dozen hens with a cock. Wife to have two of his best beasts (after his herriot has been paid) , and all her chamber except the press that stands in the chamber, which is to go to testator’s son William on her death. To William Stalford son of Thomas Stalford late deceased a great coffer, a round table and 6s. 8d.. To Elizabeth Stalford the daughter of Thomas Stalford deceased testator’s cupboard in the hall, and a brass pot and 6s. 8d.. Wife Elizabeth and son William to have the custody of these things until the two children come to the age of 18. To son William the table in the hall and a pair of andirons. To testator’s daughter Elizabeth Prior 20s., and to each of her nine children 6s. 8d.. To his daughter Alis Honor 20s. and to each of her four children 6s. 8d.. To daughter Joane Kegill 20s. and to each of her five children 6s. 8d.. To son William’s five children 33s. 4d.. To his son John’s two children 13s. 4d.. To John his son 20s.. To the poor folks in Sonden 20s.. He gives 50s. to buy a vestment and a cross cloth to serve God in the church and these are to be brought to the church on the high festival days by wife Elizabeth or son William “who shall have the custodie and kepinge of the same vestment and crosse clothe so long as it shall please God that the service of God shalbe menteyned and used as it is at this present tyme in the churche and so I will that the sayd vestement and crosse cloth to remayne alweyes in the custodie of the next of my bloode, and yf it fortune that the service of God be not used as it is at the makinge of this my last will that then the seyd vestement and crosse clothe to be sold and distribut for the Welthe of my soull and all Christen soules as they shall best which shall have the custodie and kepinge of the same [sic]” To the bells 12d., to the Rood light 3s. 4d.. Towards his burial 20s. and to his month’s day 20s.. To every godchild 4d. provided always that if Elizabethe keep herself unwed she is have her abode with son William as above. Goods unbequeathed “I gyve Ellyne and Eliz. My wiffe whome I make my executrixe” and son in law William Prior executor with her, he to have 6s. 8d.. Son William to be overseer. Witnesses William Lewes vicar of Sonden, Thomas Peppiat, Richard Hawkynes, Thomas Draper with others.
