    Folio 23d - Richard Hale of Barton, husbandman, made 26 July pr. 27 Dec. 1556. “I bequeth my sowle to allmighty god to our Lady sainct Mary and to all the holy company of heaven” and burial in churchyard of St. Nicolas in Barton. To high altar of Barton for tithes forgotten 7d. and to the upkeep of the bells 4d.. To daughter Elizabeth half a quarter of barley to be paid her within 2 years of testator’s death. To daughter Alis half a quarter of barley to be given her within 4 years of his death. To daughter Joan half a quarter of barley to be paid within 6 years of his death. To son John a quarter of barley and to son Mathew a quarter of barley. He surrenders his copyhold house and all that belongs to it into the hands of William Hale to the use of testator’s son Thomas on condition that Thomas allows testator’s wife Alis to continue dwelling there for the term of her life while she remains unmarried, and Alis is to have a half acre of land lying in Short Furlong, a half acre lying on Litell Unlow in the Est Feld of Barton, an acre lying on Broode Forlong in the North Feld and a half acre lying in [?]Codworth, and son Thomas is to till and harrow the land as he does his own, and prepare it for the cart and carry it for the term of her life, if she remain unmarried. Should she remarry she shall have the land for 8 years only, and she to see it carried, and Thomas shall keep a cow for Alcee after her own straw is spent every year. To son Thomas also all the horses, all carts and cart gear, ploughs and plough gear. Residue to wife Alyce and son Thomas who are to be executors to use to the pleasure of God and the health of testator’s soul. Witnesses Richard Lawndys priest, William Hale, Robert Woodward.
