Reply letter from Mrs. Phyllis Ruth Foss of 18 St.Michael’s Road, Bedford to Mr. Soper concerning the death of her husband Brigadier Charles Calverley Foss… ‘Thank you so much for your very kind sympathy in the shattering loss of my beloved husband – You have mentioned three different activities in which you were associated with him; O I can quite believe that he was at his best when with the natural history and field club society – We shall miss him terribly but I also feel so proud to think that he belonged to me in a very special way – even if it was for such a terribly short period. Again thanking you so much for your sympathy’. [Note: Charles had a distinctive military career, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for valour in France in 1915 and was a Commander for the Home Guard during the 2nd World War. Charles married his second wife Phyllis Ruth Crowther in June 1950 and died in a London Hospital on the 9th Apr 1953 aged 68.
