Letter from Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries to Arthur Thorn: "Extinguishment of manorial Incidents Manor of Eyton, alias Eaton Bray - Bedford I am directed to refer to your previous correspondence in the above matter and to inform you that an application, dated 31st July 1936 has now been made to the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, under Section 140 of the Law of Property Act 1922, by the lord of the above manor, to determine the amount of compensation to be paid by you in respect of the manorial incidents formerly affecting your land, which became automatically extinguished on the 1st January 1936. it is understood that the lord of the manor has already given you notice of this by sending you a copy of his application (From No.B.19 /L.E.) [see BH/2/79/3/8] I am to point out that under the Manorial Incidents (Extinguishment) (Amendment) Rules, 1935, you may submit to the Minister in writing within 28 days from the giving of the abovementioned notice any observations upon the lord's application. Before you decide, however, whether to submit any observations or not, I am to invite your attention to the enclosed copy of the memorandum (Form No.B.27/L.E.) regarding the present position as to manorial incidents, and to suggest that you should give very careful consideration to the desirability of approaching the lord with a view to arriving at an agreement independently of the Property Acts 1922 and 1924, as to the amount of the compensation to be paid to him, and so avoid the extra cost which, if the Ministry proceeds to make an Award, you may ultimately be called upon to bear in respect of stamp duty and of the Department's fee and expenses (see enclosed copy extract from the Fees (Compensation for Manorial Incidents) Schedule 1936). If you and the lord enter into negotiations with a view to an agreement, you should arrange that the lord should notify the Ministry, before the expiry of the period of 28 days abovementioned, that such negotiations have been begun and that he agrees that the Ministry should postpone further action until it is requested by him or you to proceed, and the Ministry will then act accordingly. If you enter into negotiations but the negotiations do not result in an agreement, the Ministry will, at your request give you such further time as it considers reasonable in which to submit to it observations on the lord's application. If, however, you do not enter into negotiations, any observations you wish to make upon the lord's application, must, as pointed out above, be submitted within 28 days from the date of the notice of this application. I am to add that the Ministry is informed that the land described in the schedule to the lord's application is not separately assessed for the purpose of Schedule A of the Income Tax Acts and I am to ask you to be good enough to confirm this statement. Copies of the Manorial Incidents (Extinguishment) Rules 1925 (Statutory Rules and Orders 1925 No.810) and the Manorial Incidents (Extinguishment) (Amendment) Rules 1935 (Statutory Rules and Orders 1935 No.1241) may be obtained either directly from His Majesty's Stationery Office, Adastral House, Kingsway, London W.C.2., or through any bookseller, price 7d. net and 2d. net respectively".
