- TitleLetter from: Cookson, Wainewright & Pennington, 6 New Square, Lincoln's Inn; to: Charles Stockdale Benning, Town Hall, Dunstable: "J.J.T.Stevens's Copyhold We enclose a description taken from the Court Rolls of these Copyhold lands as they existed previous to the Inclosure of Eaton Bray. If you consult Mr.Purton as to the identity and value of the said copyhold lands you will bear in mind that, as regards value, what is wanted is their value as compared with that of the freehold lands of Mr.Stevens as they existed previous to the Inclosure. We shall be glad to know whether Mr.Purton is able to identify the position of the copyholds according to the description in the enclosed paper. The statutory powers which appear to authorize the contemplated arrangements are as follow: 4 & 5 Vict. c 35 (1841) Sect 56 tenants for life empowered to enfranchise, 62 payments may be deferred 6 & 7 Vict c.23 (1843) Sectns 1 & 3 power to convey land as consideration for enfranch't 7 & 8 Vict c.55 (1844) Sectn 5 extending power to convey land for enfranch't We have written to the Office of the Inclosure Commissioners as to the estimation in which Mr.Saunders and Mr.Cumberland are held there PS 15 & 16 Vict c.51 (1852) Sect 53 declares that all the enactments in the acts mentioned on the other side shall be deemed & taken to apply to enfranchisements under this Act 21 & 22 Vict c.94 (1858) Sect 24 expenses of Enfranch't may be charged on the land".
