  • Title
    Information of William Bedlow, Superintendent of Police at Biggleswade. Morton Pickett, Keeper of the Beerhouse at Shefford, kept his premises open 'after hours'. Statement of William Goare who says he bought 3 quarts of beer in a bottle at half past 5.00pm on 11 October (Shefford Fair Day). He left by the front door and went down the gate through his yeard and hid it under some straw. When he returned the gates were locked. He told Oscar Mees and they went over the adjoining garden. Goare went for his beer and Mees went to the door. Statement of Oscar Mees, Labourer of Campton. He and William Goare went through Stanbridge's garden gate and over the wall into Mr Pickett's back yard between 10.00pm and 11.00pm. They went to Pickett's back door and asked for 3 quarts of beer. While the landord drew the beer Mees went to the closet. They paid for the beer and came back through Stanbridge's garden gate and over the wall. Statement of Susan Stanbridge, wife of Frederick Stanbridge bricklayer, lives at the New Inn Public House in Campton. At 11.00pm she saw 2 men go into her garden and go through the gate. She went after them and saw Oscar Mees standing on Morton Pickett's step at the back door. About 10 minutes later Oscar Mees left her garden with a large bottle. She didn't see the other man again. Statment of Morton Pickett who says he is a Stonemason and keeps a Beer House at Shefford. He stated that William Goare boght 3 quarts of beer in a stone bottle at about 5.00pm and that he left by the front door. He stated that the doors were locked at 10.00pm and that Oscar Mees came to his back door at 10.30pm and asked for 3 quarts of beer. He refused because it was after hours. He did not see Goare. Statement of Julia Pickett, wife of Morton Pickett who said the Beer House was closed at 10.00pm and after this oscar mees came to the back door asking for some beer. She said no beer was drawn.
