Scope and Content
The Company was formed in 1849 following 'several meetings of Gentlemen interested in the formation of a Corn Exchange in the town of Bedford.' The early minutes deal mainly with the designs and tenders for the building of a corn exchange, hiring of staff and rules and regulations. The Corn Exchange building opened on the 2nd March 1850. On the 15th December 1870 'a special meeting of the Directors of the Bedford Corn Exchange Company and other Gentlemen interested in promoting the erection of a more commodious building as a Corn Exchange was held at the Shire Hall.' At this meeting various proposals were put forward. That afternoon a committee of the council met and was of the opinion 'that it was desirable that the Corporation of Bedford should take the erection of the new building into their own hands.' In May 1873 the Corporation paid £2400 for the purchase of the Corn Exchange and all the interest of the Company and the Company was wound up.
